Detectors of Ionizing Radiation – IP 1309

Ionizingradiation has many industrial, military, and medical uses includingsterilization of surfaces and solutions, as well as in medical imaging.Alanine pellets and ceric cerous solutionare traditionally used as dosimeters to measure radiation exposure levelsrequired for sterilization of medical products. Researchers at FIU have discovered a newradiation indicator by using a different class of compounds that undergoes adistinct green to red change in the presence of free radicals. The compound iscoated to a support surface that can undergo radiation damage and serve as afree radical source. Anne Laure Schmitt Olivier aschmitt@fiu.edu 305-348-5948
