UMIP-170 – Topical Acetaminophen for Itch Relief

Problem: Pruritus, or itch, is a sensation that stimulates the desire or reflex to scratch, which can be either generalized or localized and may be caused by multifactorial etiologies. It is a common distressing symptom, accounting for nearly 77 million physician visits over an 11 year time period. Current therapies have been on the market for nearly fifty years, but fail to treat the actual itch response. These therapies generally include topical drug formulations containing diphenhydramine or hydrocortisone; however, these formulations target only the inflammation response, while failing to treat the itch. Therefore, there is an unmet need to develop effective topical anti-itch medications for acute and chronic itch as currently there are only few topical formulations that have a direct effect on itch. Technology: Researchers at the University of Miami have discovered a novel, effective, over the counter, topical antipruritic to treat acute and chronic itch, utilizing acetaminophen, a popular and widely used drug for pain relief, as the active ingredient. Recent studies have shown that acetaminophen and topical cannabinoid agonists are effective for itch relief. Topical acetaminophen cream significantly reduced non histaminergic itch over the vehicle cream in healthy subjects. Peak itch relief was seen after 30 minutes of the topical application. During this time, the duration of itch was significantly reduced by 2 minutes and the intensity of the itch was reduced by 50%. Furthermore, redness was also reduced. Peter Gutenberg 305-243-4604
